BIWIC 2010 in Halle (Saale)

Introduction

Crystallization is an important technique for separation and purification of substances as well as for product design in chemical, pharmaceutical and biotechnological process industries. Besides the typical demand for certain purity, often specific application-oriented characteristics such as size, size distribution and shape of the crystalline products are to be adjusted and controlled. In case of organic materials relevant in industrial growth sectors (pharmaceuticals, fine chemicals and life sciences) further challenges of polymorphism, formation of solvates and solid solutions arise. In order to address the related complex tasks, an interdisciplinary approach is required.

The International Workshop on Industrial crystallization (BIWIC) intends to bring together scientists and engineers from academia and industry, already experienced or beginners, to present and discuss current work and also to identify new challenging research fields of industrial interest. The 17th event continues a successful series of meetings primarily initiated by Joachim Ulrich and already held in Bremen, Delft, Rouen, Gyeongju, Cape Town, Magdeburg and in the last year in Lappeenranta.

We are pleased to host the BIWIC in 2010, 20 years after its start, at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg, Centre for Engineering Science, Process Technology and are looking forward to welcome you in September 8th -10th 2010 in Halle (Saale).
